Makayla is also the Head Girls Soccer Coach at South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics of Hartsville, South Carolina. She has been a part of their athletic program for four years. While she attended Coker University, Makayla played collegiate soccer for four years and collegiate golf her last year while attending Coker. Makayla’s leadership in the funeral industry began at the young age of 20. Due to Covid-19 Makayla started working full time with her family’s business, during her last year at Coker University. She has always been the behind the scenes person that handled the everyday operation of the business from then on. Over the past six years, she has successfully combined youthful innovation with a respect for tradition, ensuring that her support in the funeral industry remains a trusted partner for families navigating the challenges of loss. Even though she has a fifty percent ownership in her family’s funeral company, Makayla wanted to work for a bigger purpose, to not just plan and organize funerals, but to really be a guidance to families. She made the decision to establish Shepherd’s Funeral Home, where she could fully realize her vision of compassionate, community-centered funeral care the way her late aunt, Joan Fulmore would have wanted her to commit to. November of 2023 was when Makayla decided that she would start her new venture to open her own funeral home, Shepherd’s Funeral Home, that symbolizes every family having a guide during their new journey. She and her team takes the time to understand the unique needs and wishes of each family, tailoring services to create meaningful and memorable farewells. This personalized approach ensures that every service is as unique as the individual being honored, regardless of price.

The funeral home offers a comprehensive range of services, including traditional and non-traditional funerals, cremations, memorial services, aftercare program, and pre-planning consultations. The facilities are designed to provide a serene and comforting environment where families can gather to celebrate and remember their loved ones at any time. Including the comfort of having an in house financing option that can help families that have a challenging time financially.

Community engagement is a cornerstone of Shepherd’s Funeral Home’s philosophy. Makayla actively participates in local organizations, churches, and community events, fostering a sense of trust and belonging. Makayla’s leadership in her church, Mt. Beulah United Methodist Church of Lake City, SC, further underscores her dedication to serving her community.
