“Mortgage brokers told us three years ago when we founded the BAC that trigger lead legislation was one of the most important issues for them,” McKay said. “And in just three years, which is considered a relatively short time in DC terms, the legislation has passed, and that issue has been addressed.”

That win, McKay argues, should serve as a positive indication to the broader broker community that sustained, well-supported advocacy can lead to results. His advocacy work has focused on issues affecting brokers’ ability to serve Veterans, minorities, and underserved communities.

Rachel Clark, Executive Director of the BAC, framed the joint event as an opportunity to amplify a voice that becomes stronger when united. “Policy decisions are being made every day that directly impact brokers and the families we serve,” Clark said. “By co-hosting this event with NAMB, we are creating a stronger, louder, and more influential voice for independent brokers. McKay echoed that sentiment, emphasizing that differences within the broker community should not divide them in Washington. “In DC, we are united,” he said. “We do not care if you’re W-2 or 1099. We do not care if you are a true broker or if you’re a non-delegated correspondent, and we certainly do not care which mortgage lenders you do or do not work with.”

With the trigger lead victory behind them, McKay is now urging brokers to continue supporting the advocacy infrastructure that made it possible. “Brokers are a group that tends to be skeptical,” he said. “Well, you’ve seen it. The BAC has demonstrated its capability to advocate for and represent mortgage brokers in Washington, DC. And if you want this to continue, you need to step up and help fund it.”

McKay described the gap between what BAC has achieved with limited resources and what it could accomplish with broader financial support. “We’re constantly having to prioritize which issues we can take on and which ones we can’t from a logistical standpoint,” he said. “If we were talking about getting donations at scale, there would really be few limits to what we could accomplish.”
