In the bustling city of Lexington, KY, lies a hidden gem—one of the only six licensed laser and electrology schools in the United States, the Southeastern School of Laser and Electrology. This family-owned business has been shaping the future of aspiring electrologists and laser specialists since 1989. With a rich history, groundbreaking achievements, and a focus on quality education, this school stands out as a true pioneer in aesthetic medicine and laser education.

The Humble Beginnings with Mrs. Louis Chaffins

The story began in 1975 when Mrs. Louise Chaffins, a determined and passionate woman, embarked on her journey to become an electrologist. Trained in North Carolina, she started her practice in the back of her mobile home, serving clients with dedication. Despite the challenges, Mrs. Chaffins’ perseverance paid off, allowing her to expand her practice, first to her home and then to a rented space in Hazard, KY.

Mrs. Chaffins’ journey was not without obstacles. Her husband lost his job at a coal company and had to return to school to complete his psychology degree. During this challenging period, Mrs. Chaffins continued to support her family through her practice, often working late into the night. Her unwavering determination laid the foundation for what would become a successful and respected educational institution.

From Electrolysis to Education with Chris Chaffins

In 1989, Mrs. Chaffins took her passion for electrology to the next level by opening an electrolysis school. Her goal was simple yet profound: to teach others how to become independent practitioners and run their own successful practices. Over the years, the school grew, offering three electrolysis programs, two laser hair removal programs, and one tattoo removal program.

In 2012, Mrs. Chaffins’ son, Christopher, joined the school, bringing with him a vision for innovation. He developed a standardized medical laser core content curriculum, which was eventually passed by the Ohio Medical Board. Christopher’s efforts led to the school becoming the first in North America to offer a standardized curriculum in medical laser procedures, setting a new benchmark in the industry.

Achievements and Recognition

The Southeastern School of Laser and Electrology has earned numerous accolades over the years, solidifying its reputation as a leader in the field. It is the only licensed and accredited laser and electrology school in Kentucky, approved by several prestigious organizations, including the North Carolina Electrolysis Examiners Board, the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, and the Tennessee Electrolysis Board.

One of the school’s significant achievements is its high employment rate for graduates. Recognized by Consumer Reports, the school consistently produces graduates who secure employment soon after completing their programs. This success is a testament to the quality of education and the practical skills students acquire during their training.

In 2021, the school was voted the best laser hair removal service by expertise.com, further cementing its status as a leading institution for its education. Additionally, the intellectual property rights for the standardized medical laser core content curriculum were granted by the copyright office in Washington, DC, in 2013.

Kravinol: Addressing the Opioid Crisis

The school is actively engaged in addressing the opioid crisis through its 501(c)(3) initiative, “Kravinol.” This initiative involves developing a medical supplement, which has undergone initial testing. Further research is planned to continue exploring its potential. The school is seeking support to advance this research and is inviting donations through their website at kravinol.com. Contributions will assist in furthering the development of this initiative, which is part of a broader effort to address significant public health challenges.

Future Expansion and Continued Excellence

Looking ahead, the school plans to expand its operations by opening satellite locations in various states across the eastern part of the country. The focus will remain on providing high-quality education while collaborating with other schools, boards, and government entities to ensure student success. The family’s commitment to teamwork, communication, and a community of positivity continues to drive the school’s growth and inspire future generations.

It’s really quite simple,” Chris Chaffins states, “we continue to push forward in the face of adversity, while remembering the quote from the famous Dr. Zargari, Never Give Up.”’
