Over 20 million people play Netball worldwide, yet many Americans are just now discovering this fast-paced, inclusive sport, thanks to the tireless work of Netball America® and its visionary CEO, Sonya Ottaway. Why hasn’t a sport played by millions captured the American imagination yet? That’s about to change. With Netball America® leading the charge, this exciting sport is gaining traction across the United States, offering opportunities both on and off the court.
Netball America®, a 501(c)(3) charity organization based in the U.S., is at the forefront of this growing movement, pioneering the expansion and recognition of Netball not only in North America but also in parts of South America. Played by over 20 million people globally, Netball is a fast-paced, non-contact team sport that shares similarities with basketball but with a unique set of rules designed to promote teamwork, quick decision-making, and fitness. Unlike basketball, Netball does not involve dribbling or backboards, and each player is restricted to certain parts of the court, which adds a level of strategy to the game. While hugely popular in countries like Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, netball remains relatively unknown in the U.S..
Netball America® is determined to change that, creating positive social change through sports while building an expansive network of members across 33 U.S. states. Their programs extend into Canada, the Caribbean, South Africa, and Uganda, fostering community engagement and inclusivity. This initiative is rapidly spreading awareness about Netball while also creating opportunities for diverse communities to come together.
In recognition of her impactful work, Netball America’s CEO, Sonya Ottaway, received the prestigious 2024 President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition Community Leadership Award on September 6, 2024, in Washington, D.C. This accolade underscores Netball America’s commitment to promoting health, wellness, and inclusivity through sports programs. Additionally, the organization has attracted support from high-profile entities such as Billie Jean King’s Women’s Sports Foundation, NIKE, the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons Foundation, Rotary International, Beyond Sport, Z Zurich Foundation, Laureus Foundation, and Nickelodeon Kids TV. These endorsements highlight Netball America’s growing influence in the world of sports and its role in championing social equity and health across underserved communities.
A core component of Netball America’s mission is its award-winning “Be An Inspiration®” program, which has made a significant impact, reaching over 100,000 youth with year-round FREE programming. Focused on social-emotional learning, nutrition, mental wellness, and physical fitness, the program addresses social inequities by providing free access to sports and life skills training for underserved youth in the U.S., Canada, South Africa, and Uganda. This initiative is especially significant for minority communities, including Black and LGBTQ+ youth, offering a safe space for them to engage in sports while learning essential life skills.
Netball America’s influence isn’t limited to grassroots efforts. It has also made waves on the international sports stage. The organization has established the first all-American citizen USA Netball team and created the Stripes to Stars Elite Pathway, providing opportunities for athletes, coaches, and umpires of all genders. The team’s recent achievements include gold and silver medal wins at tournaments in Dubai and placing among the top-ranked teams in the UK national championships. These accomplishments are a testament to the dedication and talent cultivated by Netball America® as it nurtures and promotes the sport at high levels.
In addition, Netball America® spearheads the annual US Open Netball Championships®, an international sporting and education event that brings together teams worldwide. Each year, the championships are hosted in a different U.S. city, showcasing the vibrancy and appeal of the sport. Last year’s event took place in New Orleans, and this year, Phoenix, Arizona, will serve as the host city. The tournament features 30 teams from 24 U.S. states and eight countries, promoting cultural exchange and diversity through sport. With over 100,000 viewers tuning in via free telecasts at www.USOpenNetball.TV, the US Open Netball Championships® help increase the sport’s visibility and emphasize its role in bridging cultural divides.
Sonya Ottaway, co-founder and CEO of Netball America®, continues to be instrumental in the organization’s growth and outreach. Her passion for Netball has taken her to international platforms such as Oprah Winfrey’s Leadership Academy and the Asia Pacific World and Sport Conference, furthering her vision of using sports as a vehicle for positive change. Under her leadership, Netball America® has initiated groundbreaking projects, including building a Netball court in South Africa and collaborating with the U.S. Ambassador to create Netball opportunities for girls in Uganda. Her vision continues to drive Netball America’s mission forward, inspiring a new generation of athletes and sports enthusiasts.
Netball America’s work extends beyond sports and into the economic and social well-being of communities. By creating job opportunities for Netball coaches and youth, the organization contributes to the economic growth of the communities it serves. Moreover, its efforts to integrate Netball into the U.S. educational system are gaining traction. The sport’s curriculum has been introduced into over 100 schools nationwide, helping to inspire young minds and promote values such as teamwork, discipline, and inclusivity.
As Netball continues to gain recognition in the U.S., the demand for partnerships and sponsorships is increasing. Netball America® offers unique opportunities for sponsors to align with a rapidly growing grassroots sport. As a Black-owned organization committed to empowering minority youth, Netball America’s programs offer partners the chance to make a meaningful impact. By supporting initiatives that promote diversity, health, and social equity, sponsors can play a key role in shaping the future of Netball in the U.S. and beyond.
