Purpose is often the first thing people lose sight of during major life transitions. Whether facing career disruption, burnout, caregiving responsibilities, illness, or personal loss, many people find themselves questioning what comes next. Barbara Bray believes the answer begins by reconnecting with something deeper: understanding why they do what they do.
Award-winning author, Empowerment Coach, speaker, and podcast host Barbara Bray has officially launched Grow Your WHY, a coaching and speaking platform that brings together more than three decades of work helping individuals navigate change with greater clarity, confidence, and purpose.
The launch represents an evolution of Bray’s long-standing work through Rethinking Learning, where she built an international reputation through keynote speaking, consulting, podcasting, and leadership development. Now, Grow Your WHY serves as the central hub for her coaching programs, speaking engagements, podcast conversations, and published works.
“People don’t stay stuck because they lack ability,” says Bray. “They stay stuck because they lose connection to their voice, their story, and what truly matters to them. I help people reconnect with that so they can move forward with confidence and purpose.”
A Framework for Purpose-Driven Change
At the heart of the platform is Bray’s Purpose Shift™ VALUES Framework, a six-step process designed to help individuals reconnect with themselves during periods of personal or professional transition. The framework supports a broad range of people, including women navigating caregiving responsibilities, burnout, illness, loss, or reinvention; educators exploring new paths beyond traditional systems; and leaders facing unexpected changes in their careers.
Rather than focusing solely on performance goals, Bray’s approach encourages individuals to examine the values, experiences, and personal stories that influence how they make decisions and shape their futures.
“Resilience isn’t about bouncing back,” Bray explains. “It’s about growing forward with intention and becoming more aligned with who you truly are.”
That philosophy has become increasingly relevant in today’s workplace, where many professionals are reevaluating career paths, leadership styles, and definitions of success. As organizations continue to navigate rapid change, there is growing recognition that meaningful growth often requires personal reflection as much as strategic planning.
Bray’s coaching process combines storytelling, reflection, and practical decision-making tools designed to help clients gain momentum and move forward with purpose. She is known for what she calls “listening to the story behind the story,” helping individuals identify patterns, strengths, and experiences that can guide their next chapter.
Clients often describe her approach as both supportive and actionable.
“Barbara is skilled at honoring big dreams while anchoring them in practical, achievable steps,” says Kim Zajac, Architect of Access. “She helped me uncover my why, identify what truly drives me, and take meaningful action.”
Turning Life Experience Into Impact
In addition to coaching, Bray has built a respected body of work as an author. Her book Grow Your Why: One Story at a Time was recognized as a Best Book Award finalist in nonfiction narrative. She is also the author of Define Your WHY: Own Your Story So You Can Live and Learn on Purpose, a book that explores personal agency and intentional growth through storytelling.
One of the notable contributors to Define Your WHY was legendary heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman. Foreman shared his story in the book and maintained a long connection with Bray’s family dating back to his early years at Job Corps, where Bray’s father served as a mentor. Over the years, Foreman supported Bray’s entrepreneurial efforts, including helping promote the book through a signed boxing glove giveaway.
Bray’s influence also extends through her podcast. Formerly known as “Rethinking Learning” and now operating as the “Grow Your WHY Podcast,” the show has featured more than 180 conversations with educators, authors, and thought leaders exploring topics such as identity, resilience, leadership, and purpose.
Her perspective is shaped not only by professional experience but also by personal challenges. As a cancer survivor, Bray has spoken openly about years of dismissed health concerns before ultimately receiving a lung cancer diagnosis. The experience strengthened her commitment to self-advocacy and trusting personal instincts, themes that continue to influence her coaching and speaking work today.
Based in Oakland, California, Bray remains committed to helping people navigate transitions with greater self-awareness and confidence. Through Grow Your WHY, she brings together the lessons, stories, and frameworks she has developed throughout her career to support individuals seeking meaningful change.
As more professionals and leaders search for purpose-driven ways to move forward, Bray’s message remains clear: understanding your story and your values may be the most important step toward creating what comes next.
